The first time we landed in Iceland in 2017, I had no idea this island would reshape the way I see love, travel, and storytelling.
I still remember stepping outside and feeling the crisp, clean air. Within days, we experienced our first midnight sun and watched golden light linger long past what should have been night. We got caught in a sudden storm, stood on cliffs watching puffins, and drove through landscapes that seemed almost unreal.
There were endless moss-covered lava fields, the black sand shores of Reynisfjara, and powerful waterfalls like Skógafoss. Everywhere we looked, nature reminded us how wonderfully small we are. Somewhere between the wind, the wild landscapes, and the silence, we fell in love with Iceland. And we have returned every year since.
Why Iceland Feels Like Another World
Iceland is more than a beautiful destination. It is a place that makes you feel something. The landscapes are raw and untouched. Moreover, the weather can transform everything within minutes. Sunshine disappears behind dramatic clouds, fog wraps around mountains, and strong winds sweep across the Icelandic Highlands. Nothing here feels staged. Yet somehow, everything looks cinematic.
For someone like me, who is drawn to warm vintage tones, moody skies, and the timeless feeling of film photography, Iceland feels like stepping into a living, breathing love story. Over the years, exploring the Icelandic Highlands in a camper has become one of our favorite adventures. There are endless roads and no need for strict timelines. Instead, we have the freedom to stop whenever a landscape catches our attention.
Lava fields stretch towards the horizon. Sheep wander through the moss, while glaciers shimmer in the distance. Sometimes, Iceland feels less like Europe and more like another planet.
Our Own Iceland Elopement and Vow Renewal
For our 10-year anniversary, Iceland became more than a country we loved visiting. It became part of our marriage. We rented a camper once again and drove deep into the Highlands. There were no guests, decorations, or expectations. Instead, we brought our cameras, tripod, and drone and followed the road.
Eventually, we found ourselves surrounded by mountains and lava fields. There, we renewed our vows with nothing but the sky, earth, wind, birds, and sheep as our witnesses.
It was intimate, honest, and wildly romantic. That experience changed the way I see weddings and elopements forever. Iceland strips everything back to what truly matters. When you stand in front of a powerful waterfall or alone on a black sand beach, you realize that love doesn’t need a ballroom.
It needs space, intention, and presence.
Why You Should Visit Iceland at Least Once
I truly believe everyone should experience Iceland at least once in their lifetime. Of course, the waterfalls, glaciers, puffins, Northern Lights, and midnight sun are unforgettable. However, what makes Iceland truly special is the feeling it leaves behind.
Every season also tells a different story. In summer, the midnight sun fills the landscape with endless golden light. Autumn brings dramatic skies and deep earthy colors. During winter, snow-covered landscapes and the Northern Lights make the island feel almost mythical. Then spring arrives, bringing powerful waterfalls, longer days, and new life.
No matter when you visit, Iceland has something extraordinary to offer.
